I've tried Aveda's 'Clarifying' Shampoo as recommended by my stylist. It doesn't do much other than another fancy name for a mediocre shampoo.

Is it safe to use on colored or darker hair? I thought baking soda has whitening effect.

The cheap and old stand-by is good old baking soda. Just mix a little bit to the shampoo you have in your hand and wash your hair as normal. Works every time. And just in case it's a little too drying for your hair, condition your hair as normal.

I use another brand of apple cider vinegar rinse (John Masters) once a week. I think it does an excellent job of getting rid of all the layers of hair gunk I apply daily. I've liked this best becasue some clarifiers leave your hair feeling dry, tangled and strawlike. Cider vinegar rinses don't seem to have this effect.

Abba's Molasses Purifier is a great shampoo for this. Doesn't seem to strip your hair.

It's strong so it will wash out food, etc. that babies might get in their hair, or so I've heard. I think I only used one bottle of it with my daughter and then switched to something else.

You use baby oil (or other oils) not baby shampoo to get rid of cradle cap. How can baby shampoo be harsh if it's okay to go in their eyes?

I read that it's not that it doesn't sting their eyes, but that there's something in it that numbs them. Not sure if that's true or urban legend though.

Dear G-d, are you serious?? Wow. Thank goodness I found Burt's Bees - that's been the best stuff for my youngest. The older 2 do well with L'Oreal Just for Kids, although now I'm wondering.

The reason why baby shampoo is 'stronger', 'harsher', etc., is because of the pH. The majority of shampoos have a pH between 5.0 and 6.5 as this is best for hair proteins, color retention, and permanents. Surfactants, (the cleansing agents) do not perform as well at acidic pH levels (below 7.0). The pH of baby shampoo is higher, 7.0 -7.5, so that it will not irritate the eyes. A pH lower than 7.0 is acidic and will cause discomfort if it gets into the eyes. That is why baby shampoo is safe for the eyes. It is not because of an additional ingredient that makes it safe. Additionally, baking soda works because it increases the pH of shampoo above neutral, >pH 7.0 and into the alkaline range where the performance of most surfactants is increased. It may not seem like much but each pH level increases the hydrogen ion concentration tenfold, like earthquake levels increase.
