I've been very interested in funky fashion and sort of weird trends lately (for my stage-wear) and I thought that it may spark my whimsy to get hold of a Japanese Fashion or Teen magazine. Problem is, none of my book stores that carry 'foreign' magazines carry anything like that. Subscriptions to such things would be horrendous, I fear (Brit subscriptions run $75 American, for God/dess sakes). Anyone know where I could score one, bookstore wise? Somewhere in the US for not a huge amount of dough?

For you alt.fashionistas in Japan, if I got someone in Japan to send me one (my trombone player's wife is from Japan), would you know how much would it cost them American to procure one and mail it to the states?

Thanks!

I'm not sure where you live, but several places in the U.S. (NYC, San Francisco, Honolulu!) have Japanese bookstores like Hakubundo or Books Kinokuniya that sell these Japanese magazines. Needless to say, they are also exorbitantly priced, but at least you don't need to subscribe, and can decide on an issue-by-issue basis.

Are there certain magazine titles that you are interested in? I know that the Japanese have *wonderful* makeup and beauty magazines. But, as one other poster also lamented, it's too bad I can't understand what I am reading!

I'm interested mostly in the visual aspect of them. I might see if my friend knows of any Japanese or Japanese-friendly bookstores that would carry them around here.

Thanks! Kristina ************************************* http://www.unstabletina.com 70s, 80s, and 90s Retro Dance Expect the Unexpected *************************************

Definitely try to locate a Kinokuniya bookstore. I frequented the ones in NYC all the time and there would be an entire aisle of Japanese fashion mags. It's been a few years, but I particularly liked the magazine called 'WITH'. It's somewhat conservative, not too 'out there', loads and loads of photographs, almost like a catalog of makeup, outfits, handbags, shoes etc.

No, not according to their site. I'm surprised Borders doesn't have something, considering how many German, French, British, and Italian magazines they have.

For those in the Atlanta, Georgia USA area, check out Iwase in the Friday's Plaza at Tilly Mill and Peachtree Industrial. Probaby a dozen or so fashion/beauty/teen titles there.

Bummer. I'm assuming you already own/know the book _Fruits_, as that is a great source for style ideas. Also, there is a great japanese fashion website http://www.j-streetstyle.com/ these may keep you occupied for a while.

There's a lot I think borders ought carry but don't, and sadly they don't take magazine requests. cindyetta

The Japanese grapic design website Shift has a section devoted to this kind of thing, it's called 'Tokyo Cutie Girls.' The website is in both English and Japanese, just go to http://www.shift.jp.org/ and click on English, it will take you to the main page, and if you scroll down a bit you'll see the menu for the Tokyo Cutie Girls archive.
