Lace, Ruffles Fill New York Fashion Runways By Ellen Wulfhorst Reuters September 19, 2002
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Feminine lace and frilly flounces filled New York's fashion show runways on Wednesday, where designers are displaying their collections for next spring.
Marc Jacobs, Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta provided highlights on the second day of the gala week, some of the more than 100 designers showing in the twice-yearly extravaganza.
The newest looks by Jacobs, whose show is one of the most popular, shimmered with elegance, with satin dresses decorated with accordion folds, lace bodices, silver straps and empire waists in translucent champagne, peach, green and rose.
For day, he showed wool suits with short belted jackets and three-quarter length sleeves and silk dresses with cap sleeves. Nearly everything was tied with a ribbon or bow, from straight knee-length coats to sheer silk blouses.
Gauze and chiffon, decorated with skin-baring crochet or big organza bows, in shades of rose and mint took center stage in the Luca Luca collection by designer Luca Orlandi.
His blouses were peasant style with off-the-shoulder necklines and macrame detailing, scarf-like and knotted at the back or pleated silk halters with deep, loose cowl necks.
Dresses were baby-doll, and cropped tops were matched with low slung skirts or pants to bare the midriff.
Kenneth Cole used a sophisticatedly simple palette of white, ivory, beige, dusty pink, chocolate and black. His blouses were ruffled lace and smocked, and his skirts were minis, livened up with flounced hems. Models sported long silk scarves, knotted at the neck or wrapped as a headdress.
Britain's Luella Bartley looked to the mod styles of the '60s, taking blocks of color and geometric shapes and giving them a softer feel. A body-hugging off-the-shoulder mini-dress featured hot pink and yellow stripes and circles, while a suit was a candy cane of wide pink, blue, yellow and black stripes.
In a somber turn, she showed clingy black jersey mini-dresses and dark tops paired with hip-hugging pants and skirts. But she was still playful, showing soft gray shorts trimmed in pink, paired with a hip-skimming gray and pink top.
Carolina Herrera largely eschewed the traditional spring palette of pastels and embraced hues such as army green, bark, orange and peridot, a somewhat electric shade of lime.
She showed cinched and belted looks in suits, dresses or jackets and played with paisley in long graceful skirts. But in a nod to spring, a number of her pieces were a sultry grayish lilac, while her gowns bore striking botanical prints.
Navy, offset with white top stitching, piping and plackets, was the hot color in Michael Kors' sporty yet glamorous line, where mega-model Gisele Bundchen strutted in a stretch wool maillot-style bathing suit, a pique jersey polo shirt and cotton skirt and a halter-neck navy and pewter jersey dress.
Other Kors' models wore jersey polo dresses, cashmere polo tops and a full-length polo gown of navy silk jersey adorned with gray stripes at the hem.
